Low Carb or Low Fat Diet - Which one is most effective for weight loss and which is best health wise?

Low carb or low fat diet - ever wondered if one would be more effective or healthier to embark upon?



Well researchers at a US University wondered about this as well and undertook experiments to determine whether people using a low carb diet lost weight more effectively and healthily than people using a low fat diet regime supplemented with a relatively new pharmaceutical diet product known for its abilities to block fat absorption in the body.

In order to carry out their test they enlisted the support of 150 volunteers with an average age of 52; all of whom were overweight; many suffering from type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Over the course of approximately one year the subjects were given the opportunity to attend weekly group counseling sessions. Group counseling proved especially helpful to the subjects on the low fat diet as anyone cheating whilst using the medical product was quite likely to suffer rather nasty side effects.

A quote from the manufacturer’s website states "...oily spotting, loose stools and more frequent stools that may be hard to control."

This very same website also recommends that people using this medication should also take vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta- carotene. However, all these vitamins are fat soluble!!!

It should be noted therefore that as this particular medical diet product hinders the absorption of fat, it of course, also impedes absorption of these exceedingly important vitamins thereby making it a complete waste of time and money for anyone following this advice.

Getting back to the researchers and their quest to determine whether a low carb diet or a low fat diet would prove more effective for weight loss, at the end of the test they found that volunteers in both groups lost on average a good 10 percent of body fat/weight, which was of course a very successful result for all concerned.

In fact, one of the research team was quoted in a press release thus: “It’s important to know you can try a diet instead of medication and get the same weight loss results with fewer costs and potentially fewer side effects.”

It is also interesting to note that all the blood pressure results were good as well with almost half of the low carb dieters being able to reduce their blood pressure medication or stop it altogether.

However, only 21 percent of the low fat subjects were able to cut down their medication. Both groups had similar reductions in their cholesterol levels.

In conclusion and in consideration of the results of this experiment or testing a low carb or low fat diet supplemented with a fat blocking medication it would seem clear that the low carb diet is by far and away the best choice as not only will you lose weight/body fat, but your blood pressure will benefit, as will your cholesterol levels and you will end up being slimmer as well as being healthier thereby reducing your chances of suffering from elevated cholesterol levels, diabetes 2 or high blood pressure.
