What exactly are kidney stones? A good description of kidney stones would be a dense collection of miniscule sharp edged crystals (some are larger than others) that can tear at the tissues within the urinary tract as they are being expelled from the body and are responsible for creating an almost indescribable amount of pain to sufferers.
Around 70 to 80 percent of kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate crystals (salt of oxalic acid which is defined as a colourless poisonous acid). Another 10 percent are made of uric acid crystals as well as a few other rare types.
One way of reducing the possibility of the urinary stones is to take care with your diet ie, the type of food that you eat. There are elements in some foods called purines (a crystalline sold – nitrogen containing substance derived from uric acid that is the precursor of several biologically important compounds). To reduce the likelihood of uric acid stones you need to cut down on your intake of these purines as they increase the levels of uric acid in your system.
Some steps to achieve this include avoiding foods such as sardines, meat extracts, anchovies, gravies, liver, kidneys and fried foods and eat no more than 3ozs of lean meat of foods such as oatmeal, oysters, lima beans, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, tuna, ham, peas or spinach daily. Keeping your body’s PH balance as alkaline as possible will also assist in a reduction of the potential for developing kidney stones; in order to achieve a more alkaline body composition drink two to three glasses a day of orange, grapefruit and tomato juice. Drinking lots of water will also help with keeping your body in balance so aim to consume about 8 glasses a day which will assist in the prevention of the formation of uric acid stones.
Unfortunately, once you have kidney stones they can be very difficult to get rid of and sadly the older we get the more prone we become to developing this painful complaint. Also bear in mind that these stones can block the flow of urine, allowing bacteria to form causing your kidneys to swell, which can seriously damage your health, not to mention the kidney stone pain experienced as a result of the problem.
