The Health Dangers of Crash Diets! What you should be Aware of!

While "crash diets" can assist you to "lose weight," the weight you lose is generally lean muscle and water.

When you stop the diet, the water weight returns and the muscle you have lost depresses your metabolism with the result your body will begin storing more calories instead of burning them off. Muscle burns fat!

It is for this reason that when people are constantly yoyo dieting, in effect, they are putting their health in danger as faddy dieting deprives the body of the nutrients it needs in order to remain in good health.

You may or may not have noticed that the more some people diet that over time, they actually begin to get fatter.

This is a direct result of faddy dieting over a long time because when you begin eating normally after a "crash diet," your body is so starved for nutrients, and your metabolism is so deeply entrenched in "starvation mode," that it will hang on to every last bit of body fat it can conserve in preparation for the next time you starve yourself.

The end result is that you are likely to actually gain weight over the long term, rather than lose it, and your self-esteem will take a beating along with your waistline. This works well for companies that are happy to sell you on the next fad diet plan, but it will not work very well for you if you are seriously wanting to shed weight and keep it off.

In order to successfully achieve actual weight loss which will last, you need a realistic meal plan, not a fad diet. While a meal plan will not deliver results overnight, you will lose more weight (and keep it off) in a given period of time than any two crash dieters put together, and you will not be forced to starve yourself or risk your health in the process.

If you are unsure about how to put a healthy meal plan together consult a nutritionist who can advise you and help you to design a custom plan that will meet your particular needs. There are also many books available on the subject that can help.

Above all, you should try to eat frequently, five times a day is good and these should be small healthy meals as this keeps your fat burning processes working and that is what aids fat loss.

You should also drink plenty of water and ensure you consume enough fiber in your meals.

Even if you only followed these simple recommendations, without learning anything more, you would be ahead of the thousands of adults who are estimated to be chronically overweight or obese.

On a final note, I would urge that crash diets be avoided at all costs as they are unhealthy, leave you hungry and only result in weight gain rather than weight loss.
