On a daily minute by minute basis our bodies encounter organisms which are potentially dangerous, they are in the air we breathe, food we consume and liquids that we drink. This of course gives our immune systems unlimited work to do in terms of keeping us well and healthy as our bodies need a strong defence against the daily onlslaught of these deadly microscopic agents. Having a strong and healthy immune system is therefore vital if we are to survive. Our immune systems are dependant upon white blood cells functioning efficiently. The white blood cells organise and mount our resistance to infections and have an essntial role to play in keeping us fit and healthy. Our spleens, tonsils, bone marrow and adenoids are where these white cells are manufactured as well as in the glands in our lymphatic system.

While performing this service to the body it also filters out bacteria, viruses and other foreign bodies. The filtering process takes place in what are called the lymph nodes. Our lymph glands are a bit like a factory in that they produce weapons which attack any threat of disease that we may come up against. Lymph glands will often swell up when our immune system is defending us and is a sign that we may have some sort of infection. Our lymph nodes also have white cells which home in on bacteria and unwanted particles or cells. We have a particular cell called the B cell which can create antibodies aimed at specific invaders and clings on to them, effectively tagging them for eradication. We also have cells called T cells but their role is more complicated as these cells can recognise foreign encroachers to our system and have the ability to activate other cells to action in the defence of our body, these other cells are sometimes referred to as engulfing cells or natural killer cells.

Some people may refer to it as the spirtual side of ourselves or soul, whatever you want to call it, that part of us needs to be cared for as much as our physical bodies need proper nutrition in order to function well.
